Muffled hearing, a feeling of fullness, ringing or mild dizziness are all classic signs of earwax build-up. It is extremely common, completely treatable, and nothing to be embarrassed about.
Why wax builds up in the first place
Earwax is meant to be there. It traps dust and protects the ear canal. Problems start when it cannot clear naturally, which is more likely if you wear hearing aids or earbuds, have narrow ear canals, or work in dusty environments.
Stop using cotton buds
Cotton buds push wax deeper and can scratch the canal or damage the eardrum. Ear candles have no evidence behind them and carry a genuine burn risk. Neither belongs anywhere near your ears.
What microsuction involves
- A look inside the canal with a video otoscope so you can see the blockage
- Gentle suction to lift the wax out, with no water and no syringing
- A second look to confirm the canal is clear
- Simple aftercare advice to reduce repeat build-up
Most people tell us the relief is instant, and slightly surprising.
Getting ready for your appointment
Using olive oil drops for three to five days before you come in softens the wax and makes removal quicker and more comfortable. If you have had ear surgery, a perforated eardrum or an active infection, tell us when you book so we can advise safely.
How often should you have it done?
Only when symptoms return. Some people never need it again, others come every six to twelve months. Routine cleaning of healthy ears is not necessary or helpful.
Microsuction appointments at our Ryhope Road pharmacy take around 30 minutes and can usually be booked within a few days.
