Flu season in the UK usually peaks between December and March, but cases start climbing from late October. Catching it early matters because the virus spreads fast and complications can hit older adults and people with long-term conditions hard.
Know the difference between a cold and the flu
Colds creep up gradually. Flu hits suddenly and floors you. A high temperature, body aches, exhaustion and a dry cough within hours of feeling fine is a textbook flu presentation.
- Sudden fever above 38°C
- Aching muscles and joints
- Extreme tiredness lasting days
- Dry cough and sore throat
When to get your flu jab
Late September through to early November is the sweet spot. The vaccine takes around two weeks to give you full protection and that protection lasts the entire season.
If you're eligible for a free NHS flu jab, take it. It's the single most effective thing you can do this autumn.
Day-to-day habits that help
- Wash your hands properly for 20 seconds
- Bin used tissues straight away
- Keep rooms well ventilated
- Get the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep
